Definition: Gall Bladder disease includes inflammation, infection, stones, or obstruction of the gall bladder.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors:  The gall bladder is  sac located under the liver. It stores and concentrates bile produced in the liver. Bile aids in the digestion of fats, and is released from the gallbladder into the upper small intensive(duodenum) in response to food (especially fats). Conditions which slow or obstruct the flow of bile out of the gallbladder result in gallbladder disease.

Types of gall bladder disease include:

    6. Worse during deep intake of breath.

  2. Nausea and vomiting.
  3. Heartburn.
  4. Chills and shaking.
  5. Chest pain under the breastbone.

  1. Abdominal ultrasound.
  2. Abdominal CT scan
  3. Abdominal x-ray
  4. Gall bladder radionuclide scan
  5. A CBC shows infection by an elevated white blood cell count.

This disease may also alter the results of the following tests:

  1. lipase

Removal of Gall Bladder
Removal of Gall Bladder with Appendix

How is the gallbladder removed:

The surgery to remove the gallbladder is called a cholecystectomy. With traditional surgery, the gallbladder is removed through a 5 to 8 inch long incision (cut) in your abdomen. The cut is made just below your ribs on the right side and goes to just below your waist. This is called open cholecystectomy.

A newer ways to remove the gallbladder is called laparoscopic cholecystectomy. With this surgery a laparoscope (a small, thin tube with a scope on the tip of it that is used to see the inside of your body) is used to remove the gallbladder. Several small incisions are used rather than one large incision.

The laparoscope is put into your body through a tiny cut made just below your navel. Your doctor can then see your gallbladder on a T.V screen and do the surgery with tools inserted in 3 smaller cuts made in right upper part of your abdomen. Your gallbladder is then taken out through one of the incisions.
